Advocate® People's Rescue Story 2018 Winner

Jason Vallas and his dog, Diesel

Congratulations Jason Vallas and Diesel!

Sponsored by Bayer, the manufacturers of Advocate® Spot-on for Dogs and Cats, the Advocate® People’s Rescue Story Award is for Aussie pet guardians who have adopted or fostered a companion animal.  The judges for this Award are Dan White of Bayer and Cathy Beer of Pets4Life.

All of 428 entries – although different in a number of ways –have one thing in common: they truly inspire and demonstrate the difference a re-homed pet can make to an individual or peoples’ lives.  To choose the winner from the crème de la crème of these amazing stories has been exceptionally difficult.  However, one cannot fail but to be moved by our chosen winning story – Jason Vallas and his dog, Diesel.

It’s a story which really does demonstrate just what can be achieved with tremendous patience and perseverance.  It’s about a young, abused dog previously considered “dangerous” and, when many would have given up, the re-homing organisation involved (Forever Friends Animal Rescue in Victoria) fought at court to save the dog’s life and then was able to subsequently re-home him.  The same dog (now a much-loved pet) then found his own soulmate: a true companion whom he has helped overcome terrible grief and anxiety due to the loss of his best friend in a horrific and sadly tragic car accident. Who would have thought that the same dog that had been impounded and pretty much given up was to become so well-tempered, top of his class in obedience dog training and to eventually give back to the community by becoming a therapy dog at Headspace – the national youth mental health foundation dedicated to improving the wellbeing of young Australians.
