Artemis was born around July 2008 in Athens, Greece, probably on the street, as millions of strays in that country do. I worked as a journalist in Europe at the time, and I would travel, which meant having a pet was out of the question.
My life changed forever the evening I found her. It was dusk, so I wasn’t sure what the shadowy figure beside the garbage bin was, until I got closer, and she dropped on her back, exposing her puppy belly. She ate through two huge cans of dog food that night, and slept in my suitcase. What was I going to do? I had to get her adopted. Posters were put up and shared. Any one want this cute pup? One lady enquired but… no.
It was clear what had to happen. I quit my job and returned to Australia. Today, she lives with me in Sydney’s inner west, with her two other rescued siblings. She’s 10 years old.
In 2012, I started a charity called the Penny Marathon. We run a marathon in different cities around the world as a way to raise awareness of stay, abandoned and neglected animals, as Artemis once was.
