Squeak was a foster from Rachie’s Ratirement Home in late 2019. Squeak was surrendered to the rescue and had developed an eye infection – one so serious that it left the rescue with only two options – euthanise or operate to have the infected eye removed. There was no other reason to have Squeak put to sleep, so they chose the operation, spending hundreds of dollars to save Squeak's life. While Squeak’s surgery site healed well, her mental state was far from perfect – she jumped and squeaked at every sound (that's how she got her name!), and was very defensive when rats or people got too close.
Originally our role was to provide her with socialisation and trust-training to get her ready for her forever home. I soon realised we were meant to be Squeak’s forever home. Our other rescue rats adored Squeak, and were so patient as she learned to live peacefully with them. There were definitely some challenging days, but eventually the love from our family conquered all of Squeak’s fears.
