I adopted my kelpie Ruby when she was 6 months old from my NSW hometown where she was sitting in a backyard as an unwanted working dog. She had been named Rocky and I decided Ruby would suit her better. She was so timid and scared of everything when I first met her. On our first walk, she pulled me along so we could get back to the house quickly. I thought 'What have I done?'. Fast forward 3 years to this morning, I walked her (no pulling) to our local cafe where she sat patiently and happily waiting for me to finish my coffee. She is still a little anxious when out of her comfort zone but it has been a huge transformation. She has changed my life for the better – as someone who has experienced anxiety to varying degrees, one thing that has made a huge difference to my mental health is getting outside in the fresh air and exercising. Ruby is my reason to do this twice each day and I often think how we saved each other. She is my best and most loving friend.
