I caught it on the news bulletin – it was the last day of the RSPCA’s Clear the Shelters weekend. My husband and I had been wanting to adopt a dog, so I went online to see what dogs were available. I saw a sweet-faced girl called Maya with one straight ear and the other flopping over. I set off hoping she would still be there.
When I arrived, I was told there was only one dog left – it was Maya! She’s a Great Dane cross, was then 8.5yo and needed ongoing treatment for bad allergies, but I knew she was the one for us.
When we got home, she ran up to my husband and held up her paw for a shake and he’s been besotted with her ever since.
We have shared lots of love and great memories, like her delight when she played in the surf for the first time or when she jumped onto a barstool at our local club and looked so cheeky and pleased with herself! We manage her allergies and give her the quality of life she deserves and in return we are rewarded with love, loyalty and lots of licks!
