When my (now wife) and I first met Dexter he was a 4 month old burmese black cat that had lost a leg and was still recovering from surgery. Dexter was originally named Salem and was born in Regional Victoria but that's all the shelter could tell us about him. We decided he needed a new start and with that came a new name, Dexter, which we borrowed from an Eddie Murphy skit. Dexter was the only cat to greet us in the shelter and we decided within minutes that he was the one. Dexter then took another year before he began communicating and almost as long to get used to hobbling around on one leg, but 6 years on he has become well and truly a part of our family and we cannot imagine life without his ridiculous attempts to ambush us from behind.
