Like so many I found myself at home and out of work this year. I was struggling to find a sense of purpose – but fostering changed that. Baxter was timid, a stray taken in to the shelter aged 18 months. Within seconds of getting him home he was under the bed where he stayed for six weeks! I spent my days sitting nearby, reading a book, softly talking to him, offering treats, trying not to make eye contact. I was trying to help him feel calm, and it ended up making me feel calm too. He was scared but starting to approach and sniff my hand. Our shelter suggested a roommate could help, so we fostered Luna, a cute, curious kitten. Straight away they were inseparable, playing, sharing meals, taking naps curled up together. Baxter then had the confidence to walk around the house, and soon enough he was joining us on the couch, and following me around if he thought I had treats. As I write this he's lying curled up next to me in bed purring – the first time he's done this! Every day he gets braver and that's what makes fostering so rewarding!
